Fencing Seminar with Dmitry Usoltsev

On 8.8 we had the pleasure of hosting Dmitry Usoltsev, a highly skilled fencer and instructor, for a seminar in Israel!

The seminar covered longsword fencing in both the German tradition of Joachim Meyer and the Italian tradition of Fiore dei Liberi, as well as sabre. Usoltsev shared many insights, explained important nuances and guided us through an intense day of training.

The day before, we welcomed him to our club for a sparring session, where he faced anyone who wished to cross blades. We repeated this at the end of the seminar as well. Learning through fighting has a distinct value, and we are grateful for every bout we had with him.

The day after the seminar, we enjoyed lectures on approaches for running and managing clubs and training sessions, and we hope to implement these lessons as well.

So, a huge thank-you to Dima for his time, knowledge and attention. We look forward to training with you again!

We would also like to thank our friends at Ministry of the Fence, especially Shahar and Alex, for letting us use their lovely hall, as well as Pavel Tarasov for his help in hosting Usoltsev.

This event was a success thanks to everyone who helped and participated, and we hope to host more events like this in the future.

ב-8.8 אירחנו את דמיטרי אוסולטסב, סייף ומורה מוכשר ביותר, לסמינר בישראל!

הסמינר כלל לחימה בחרב ארוכה על-פי המסורת הגרמנית של יואכים מאייר ועל-פי המסורת האיטלקית המאוחרת של פיורה דה-ליברי, וכמובן שגם סייבר. אוסולטסב חלק עימנו דגשים חשובים, הסביר ניואנסים והדריך אותנו במשך יום שלם.

יום לפני כן הגיע דמיטרי אלינו למועדון, שם נלחם עם כל מי שרצה בכך, וכך גם עשינו בסיומו של הסמינר. למידה דרך לחימה היא בעלת ערך מיוחד, ואנחנו שמחים שאוסולטסב הצליב איתנו חרבות.

ביום שאחרי הסמינר התקיימו הרצאות, שכללו עצות לניהול נכון של מועדוני הסיף והאימונים.

אז תודה רבה, דימה! אנחנו מצפים לפגוש אותך שוב.

נרצה לומר גם תודה לחברינו במשרד הסיף (וספציפית שחר ואלכס) על כך שנתנו לנו לקיים את הסמינר באולם היפה והגדול שלהם, ולפאבל טראסוב על העזרה באירוח של אוסולטסב.

האירוע היה הצלחה בזכות כל מי שעזר, הגיע והשתתף, ואנחנו מקווים לקיים אירועים נוספים כאלה בעתיד.

Fencing Fest Cyprus 2025

ב-31.5-1.6 השתתפנו בפסטיבל סייף בקפריסין. היו סדנאות בחרב ארוכה, סייבר, חרב ובאקלר, רפייר ואפילו מונטנטה! מגוון הסגנונות והגישות היה רב. נהנינו מאוד ולמדנו רבות, גם על שיטות ניקוד ופורמטים לתחרות, משחקים שונים ואפילו כיצד להנגיש את התחום לילדים ובני-נוער.

כמו תמיד, אנחנו מנצלים כל הזדמנות ללמוד מה שאפשר ממי שאפשר, ומחכים בקוצר-רוח לפעמים הבאות.

On 31.5-1.6 we attended Cyprus Fencing Fest in Cyprus. We had workshops on longsword, saber, sword and buckler, rapier and even montante! There were a multitude of styles and approaches. We've learned much and enjoyed it all, as well as lectures on tournament formats, games in practices and even how to accommodate for children and teens in HEMA.

As always, we take every opportunity to learn anything from anyone, and we are eagerly waiting for future chances to do so.

HEMA Trip 2025

אז ביקרנו בבודפשט, ברטיסלבה, טרנבה, וינה ופראג. היינו ב-5 מועדונים שונים. פגשנו עשרות סייפים, מאמנים ומנהלי מועדונים. התאמנו שעות רבות, במגוון טכניקות, צורות ואופנים. דיברנו עם כולם על התשוקה שלהם לתחום אומנויות הלחימה ההיסטוריות, מה חשוב להם, מה יפה וטוב בעיניהם, איך הם מתאמנים, איך הם מאמנים, איך הם מארגנים ומנהלים את המועדונים שלהם. למדנו המון ואנחנו עדיין מעבדים הכל.

כל מי שפגשנו שמח לראות אותנו, הסביר לנו פנים, חלק עימנו ידע, זמן, מרץ ומשאבים אחרים. מסקנתנו החד-משמעית הייתה שיש לנו שותפים נהדרים בעולם – וכעת, אנו מקווים, גם חברים חדשים. וכמובן, הטיול היה גם הזדמנות לראות מקומות חדשים, ללמוד היסטוריה ולחזק את הקשרים שלנו האחד עם השני. מועדון כמו שלנו נשען על קשרי החברות בינינו.

הטיול שלנו היה הצלחה גדולה, ונחזור עליו בעתיד. את הלקחים והתובנות שלמדנו במסע הזה נחלוק עם חברינו בארץ, מתוך תקווה ושאיפה להרים את הרמה הכללית ולהרחיב את ההבנת האומנות של כולנו.

נרצה להודות שוב לכל מי שאירח אותנו, הדריך אותנו, הלך איתנו, האכיל אותנו והשקה אותנו – אנחנו מלאי הערכה כלפיכם. נבוא לבקר שוב ונתראה גם בתחרויות, פסטיבלים ואירועים אחרים!

So we have visited Budapest, Bratislava, Trnava, Vienna and Prague. We’ve been to 5 different clubs. We’ve met dozens of fencers, trainers, club managers and administrators. We’ve trained for many hours, in a myriad of techniques, ways and fashions. We’ve spoken with everyone about their passion for HEMA, what’s important to them, what is good and beautiful in their eyes, how do they train and teach, how do they organize and manage their clubs. We’ve learnt so much and we are still processing it all.

Everyone we’ve met was happy to meet us and was glad to share their knowledge, time, effort and other resources. Our ultimate conclusion is that we have wonderful partners in the world – and hopefully, now friends as well. And, of course, our trip was also an opportunity to see new places, learn history and reinforce our bonds with each other. A club like ours relies on friendships formed and strengthened.

Our ‘HEMA Trip’ was a great success and we shall repeat it in the future. The lessons and insights we have learnt along the way, we shall share with our friends in Israel, in the hopes of elevating everyone’s level and understanding of the art.

We’d like to once more thank all those who’ve hosted us, instructed and guided us, walked with us, fed us and drank with us – we are overflowing with appreciation and thanks. We shall visit again, and see you at competitions, festivals and other events!
